We teamed up to share our advice to a big question, “How can I successfully pivot to a new Program Manager role?”

Today, I’ll talk about how to proactively address a skills gap.

AKA how to strategically address the elephant in the room.

Let’s dive in.

Step 1: Identify a key skills gap

If a job requires that you have specific technical skills like Asana or Salesforce, don’t skirt the issue but address it head-on.

Remember, if you're being interviewed for the role, you’re already qualified.

Step 2: Craft your talk track

TIP: Lean into your strengths to address the gap with this framework:

Acknowledge Gap > Showcase Strength / Transferable skill > Address Gap

Example Script

[Acknowledge gap] “Though I haven’t used SFDC or Asana, I have used other CRMs such as Zendesk to track my client activities. [Transferrable skill]

Additionally, I’m extremely organized [Strength] and I’ve used Trello to keep projects on track.

I’m resourceful and a fast learner [Strength] so I’m confident in my ability to learn these tools in no time!” [Address the gap]

You demonstrate self-awareness and confidence that the gap will NOT hinder your ability to DO THE JOB.
