This is how I attended SXSW for FREE (in my first try)

And you can too without being an influencer.

👋 Hey, it’s Jean!

I’ve been traveling back to back, attending some of the biggest conferences like SXSW (here’s a short video recap) and NVIDIA GTC.

SXSW, or South by Southwest, is an annual event in Austin, Texas, that combines film, interactive media, music, and education.

It brings thousands of people worldwide to celebrate creativity and innovation.

Any by far, it’s the BEST conference I’ve ever attended.

📣 Before we dive in—something special for my readers 🫶

Still working a 9–5 but dreaming of building your own thing?

Join the Creator Path Summit to learn how all-star creators like Justin Welsh, Jay Clouse , & Tori Dunlap did just this without following anyone’s rules.

It’s free, virtual and packed with stories and best practices I wish I had earlier.

📆 Grab your spot April 15 & 16 (12–4 PM ET) I’ll be there too!

Here’s why:

  1. Endless networking opportunities

I’ve never seen SO many people in one place before. There are events happening all day, every day. You are 100% guaranteed to meet someone really interesting (creator, creative, or founder).

  2. It’s actually “fun”

I was surprised to attend events where you get really good food (not just passed apps), high-quality swag, and have a great time. I went to an event at Alaska Air Lounge and they were handing out free roundtrip tix as hot cakes lol

  3. You will find events for YOU

There are so many different tracks, including film, culture, edu, and creator economy. You will find ample learning and social events, and find your tribe.

How I got into SXSW (and snagged a platinum badge worth over $2000)

I did two things (and got accepted for both):

1/ Applied to be a Mentor

This is probably the easiest way to get in. All it requires is 15 minutes of mingling with 5 attendees and giving them advice on whatever is top of mind for them.

2/ Pitch to be a speaker

Here’s my pitch and LinkedIn post promoting it.

But now I got insider knowledge, here are a few added options:

  1. Apply for a media pass

  • This is a good option for journalists, bloggers, or content creators with a legitimate platform.

  • Be prepared to provide samples of your work and proof of your media affiliation.

  1. Apply to be a volunteer

  • Monitor the official SXSW website and social media channels for announcements.

  • As the event gets closer, they will generally release information on how to apply.

  • You can also try to contact SXSW directly through their general contact information, found on the main sxsw.com website.

  • Here is a link to the general SXSW contact or email [email protected]

I hope to see YOU next year!
