So what are all the differences?

We throw out "PM" willy nilly but they are NOT the same.

Let me break it down for you:

Similarities

  • Use project management methodologies like agile and scrum

  • Highly cross-functional and deeply embedded across an org

  • Must wear multiple hats to mitigate risks, get buy-in and hold teams accountable

Project Manager (PjM)

  • Manages a specific PROJECT or initiative, usually having a defined start + end date

  • Responsible for the overall success of a specific project, including budget, timeline and quality of deliverables

  • They work with stakeholders, team members, and vendors to establish project goals, milestones and resources needed.

Product Manager (PM)

  • Defines the product vision and strategy

  • Prioritizes the right features and ensures the product meets customer needs and business targets

  • Crafts the narrative around WHAT to build and WHY: Project & Program Managers then figure out HOW to do it

Program Manager (PgM)

  • Owns the overall success of a program, which often involve multiple projects and teams

  • Oversees a group of RELATED Projects or Initiatives that work towards a common goal

  • Often takes multiple months, quarters even years to accomplish

Technical Program manager (TPM)

  • Oversees planning, execution, and delivery of technical projects

  • Stakeholders often include engineering, product, design, etc.

  • Able to understand technical details and thrive in technical environments
