I want to really slow down for the holidays. I want to be intentional about what I do and how I spend my time.
For this issue, I decided to make it a bit more personal. It’s important that my audience knows who I really am (outside of social media).
So let me share why I decided to start posting on LinkedIn a year ago and why I’m so thankful I get to do what I do (post, run this newsletter and coach others).
The real reason I started posting
I always had an itch to be my own boss. I loved binging Shark Tank and wished I could be an entrepreneur.
But what could I possible offer up that hasn’t been done before?
Then I had a light bulb moment. What if I productized myself?
Here are 5 reasons that helped me inform my next move:
1/ No one talks about project / program management
To be clear: this is different now but was not the case a year ago. I had to scour the internet for content that wasn’t so dated and boring.
I always saw stuff around breaking into tech and Product but not around project and program management. And I wanted to change that.
For you: What’s an underrated topic or gap you see? What value can you provide? Start with 1 topic for 1 person.
2/ Be a thought leader
I knew LinkedIn was the place to find a job but it was just recently when I realized it was a personal branding engine. I had 100% control over what I shared, my profile, headline, links etc. It changed the game for me.
I was set on creating my own narrative:
Jean Kang, a x7 pivoter, senior program manager at Figma who coaches aspiring pivoters to build their project/program management career.
For you: What is your secret sauce? How do you want to use your LinkedIn headline to articulate your story? If you’re struggling, here’s your formula.
3/ I want to help others
I focused on posting on LinkedIn in hopes of educating and empowering others to pave their own path to project management. If I can do it, why can’t I help others do the same?
This is the ‘viral’ post that changed my life forever. It showed that people NEED this type of content so I kept iterating and posting.
For you: What data do you have on user sentiment? What posts and content resonate with people? Start polling and publishing - read through comments and engagement. This is free market research.
4/ Start a side hustle
Everyone talks about a side hustle but not everyone actions on it. I wanted to try making my own money entirely from scratch.
That’s why I went zero to 100 with this post. I became a career coach and content creator overnight.
For you: Here’s how I got started in 60 days and $200 later, I had 30 discovery calls and 10 paid clients. It can be as easy as you think.
5/ Bet on myself
Was I scared about putting myself out there? 1000% yes.
For the first 6 months, I always second guessed myself and struggled with imposter syndrome. Why am I doing this? What if I fail?
But in the end, deep inside, I knew I had to bet on myself (as I’ve done throughout my career) because what if things worked out?
Here is a quote I have stuck on my wall as my daily reminder.
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can
For you: what is 1 thing you’re itching to do? Maybe it’s applying to that job? Asking for a promotion? Publishing a post?
My advice for you? Just do it. If not you then who?
Thank you to all of you who read this post. You are the reason why I continue to create and put myself out there 💙.
Until next time.
