How to Write A Winning Resume (and Land a Program Manager job)
You don't need the PM title but you do need this
👋 Hey, it’s Jean!
I landed 95% of my jobs by applying cold.
Only 1 was a referral 🤫
While networking is important, my resume is the only thing that worked for me.
Here’s what I did:
✅ Indexed on my transferable skills and relevant wins
If I were applying to a go-to-market role, I’d include how I worked cross-functionally with GTM teams like Product, Marketing, and Sales to launch new products, enable internal teams, and close the loop on customer feedback.
If I were pivoting from Customer Success to a Program Manager role, I’d discuss leading a complex project from start to finish, change management strategy, and leading with influence.
Example:
Launched our global go-to-market strategy for X product in partnership with Product, Marketing, and Sales by leading weekly activation standups and synthesizing customer feedback resulting in X% product adoption.
✅ Showcased my impact with measurable outcomes using the Google Framework "Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y], by doing [Z]”
Example:
Reduced operational costs by X% through streamlining daily productivity reports in Salesforce and hosting monthly training workshops with global sales teams.
✅ Kept my resume under 1 page (and killed anything that wasn’t important)
Go through the JD for the role you're applying to and ask yourself, "Have I done X? If so, how? And what was my impact?"
Examples of Impact:
Did you help the team overperform with a new process?
Did you improve a process that made it easier or faster?
How did you save the company time and money?
Did you delight a customer with your strategy?
Example metrics:
You can INCREASE:
Customer experience
Employee morale
Sales / Revenue
# of customers
Product quality
Retention rate
Performance
Or DECREASE:
Customer / employee churn
# of support tickets
# of bugs / issues
Speed to delivery
Overhead costs
Impact doesn’t always need a number, but numbers help. Here’s one of my favorite frameworks for PM-ifying your resume: Problem > Action > Results.
And always remember to apply to roles that scare you.
Meeting 70% of the requirements is ENOUGH.
That’s how I got every single job 🙃
Your job is to articulate YOUR value and HOW you can make an immediate impact on the ROLE.
P.S. Want to land your next Program Manager role and thrive on the job? I’ve helped 30 project leaders accelerate their careers and land fulfilling roles.
